You don't need a car, or even a long walk: La Caletta, also known as Cala della Ghinghetta, is tucked between the houses of central Portoscuso, about 500 metres from Villa Red Melons, with the town's streets running almost right up to the sand. A staircase descends from street level to the small bay: clear water, a shallow sandy seabed, fine amber-coloured sand. It's the kind of beach you only find out about if a local points it out — one more reason to ask someone who actually lives here.
The rock and the lighthouse
Just offshore from the cove, the Scoglio della Ghinghetta — which also lends the beach its name — has carried a small lighthouse since 1912: a truncated conical tower with black and red bands, built to warn maritime traffic of the hazard off the coast. Seen from the shore, especially at first light or sunset, it's one of the most photographed views in Portoscuso.
Why it's handy if you're staying with us
The beach right outside Villa Red Melons is Portopaglietto, about thirty metres from the gate. La Caletta is a great second option within easy walking distance, around 500 metres away: right for a change of scenery some afternoon, or an evening stroll towards the centre, without moving the car and without the crowds of the larger beaches.
Practical tips
- The access staircase isn't suitable for strollers or anyone with mobility difficulties: it's a genuine little cove, not a fully equipped beach.
- There are no facilities on site (no bar, no toilets): it's meant for a short stop, not a full day out.
- Early morning is the quietest time, with the best light for photographing the lighthouse on the rock.
