For 23 editions now, in late May Carloforte — on the island of San Pietro, right across from Portoscuso — has hosted the Girotonno: an international festival dedicated to bluefin tuna that brings chefs and teams from several Mediterranean countries and beyond to the island for a tuna cooking competition that doubles as a cultural exchange. The 2026 edition ran from 29 May to 2 June, with a run-up of side events (cultural talks, dinners, the "Tuna Pizza" competition) starting on 23 May.
What happens during the festival
The programme revolves around four things: the international competition between participating countries' teams, live cooking sessions with chefs cooking in front of the public, the "Tuna Village" with ongoing tastings on the Mamma Mahon quay (12-3pm and 7-10pm), and evening shows. Watching the competition and tasting the competing dishes requires a ticket (around €25, including two tastings); the live cooking sessions, simpler, cost less.
How to get there from Portoscuso
The easiest way is the ferry from Portovesme, a few minutes from Villa Red Melons: the crossing takes about 40 minutes and lands you right in the centre of Carloforte, steps from the festival. You don't need a car on the island — the centre is easily walkable.

During the Girotonno, accommodation in Carloforte fills up fast and prices rise. Portoscuso is one ferry ride away, stays quiet even on those days, and lets you enjoy the festival in the evening and come back to sleep without the island's crowds. Parking near the Portovesme ferry terminal is convenient if you're driving.

- Ferries to Carloforte run more often during the festival, but on weekends it's still worth getting to the port with time to spare.
