Less than 5 km from Portoscuso, in the municipality of San Giovanni Suergiu, Punta Trettu has earned a reputation as Sardinia's best kitesurf spot — and, for many riders, one of Europe's best. It's no accident that people train here from all over the world: the conditions are close to textbook.
Why it's such a special spot
The secret is in the lagoon: dead-flat water, a sandy, shallow seabed for about 500 metres out from shore, never deeper than a metre. That combination makes it safe even for beginners, while being perfect for freestyle riders training tricks without the risk of choppy seas. The prevailing wind is the Mistral, blowing steadily from April to September, often boosted by a thermal effect that can add up to 10 knots on sunny days.
An international stage
Punta Trettu regularly hosts stages of the Italian Big Air Championship, held under the patronage of the Italian Sailing Federation, as well as international junior freestyle and big air competitions. It's not unusual to see world-class athletes training side by side with someone picking up a board for the first time.
What you'll find there
Along the beach, several kitesurf schools run courses for every level, along with equipment rental, a relax area, a bar and a sea-rescue service. You don't need to bring everything from home: even complete beginners can book a lesson and get into the water safely.
From Portoscuso
You get there via the SP 75 towards San Giovanni Suergiu, passing through the hamlet of Matzaccara: less than 5 km, a ten-minute drive. You can spend the day at Punta Trettu and be back at Villa Red Melons in the evening, for a real shower with the salt still on your skin.
Practical tips
- If you've never kitesurfed, book a lesson with one of the local schools: the conditions are ideal for starting out, but you still need the safety basics.
- The best period runs from April to September, when the Mistral is most consistent.
- If you just want to watch, late afternoon has the most riders in the water and the best light for photos.
