When the world's best divers come to Porto Flavia

Every summer the cliffs of the old Porto Flavia mine become a natural platform for the High Diving World Cup. Here's what to know so you don't miss it.

It's not an artificial platform — it's the real cliff face. Every year, the world's best divers jump into the sea from heights that spectators on shore can barely look at. It's the Sardinian stop of the World Aquatics High Diving World Cup, organised by World Aquatics with support from Marmeeting, which since 2025 has brought this spectacular sport straight to the cliffs of Porto Flavia, in Masua.

Men dive from a 27-metre platform, women from 20 metres: in under three seconds of free fall they reach over 85 km/h before hitting the water, with nothing but technique and focus to protect them. The 2026 edition was held on 11 and 12 July, with around 40 athletes from 17 countries competing — including Australia's Rhiannan Iffland, a five-time world champion, and American James Lichtenstein, winner of the previous edition right here in Sardinia.

Why it's worth seeing live

The cliffs of Porto Flavia offer a view no Olympic pool can match: the natural seabed, the open sea, Pan di Zucchero in the background. Public access along the site's perimeter is generally free, but the best spots fill up fast — it's worth arriving well ahead of time.

When it takes place

It's now a fixture in mid-July, though the exact dates shift a little each year: it's worth checking World Aquatics' or the Sardinia region's official channels a few weeks ahead to confirm the weekend.

Why stay with us

People coming for the event often book at the last minute, and Masua and the surrounding area fill up fast on those days. Portoscuso is about 25-30 minutes by car and makes a quiet base for the night, with private parking if you're driving to Masua on the morning of the competition.
